Even If He Does Not… wow!

Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego replied, “King Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves. If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver us from it. But even if he does not, we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.” — Daniel 3:16-18

“But even if He does not,”

Lord help me to get to this point in my life to live for you no matter what happens!! To serve you even if I am thrown into the furnace, the storm!! Praise Him!

Set An Example

Our attitudes, words, and behavior become a spiritual map for those watching our example and following our lead. And no matter how old we are, or how long we’ve been a believer, someone is watching and someone is following. Someone is looking to us as a model of faith — of love and joy and peace, of patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, and self-control — of what it means to know, enjoy, and follow Jesus. The way we live, down to the smallest details, teaches people how to walk by the Spirit, or it shows them it’s ok to try to make it on our own without thought of glorifying God.

“In everything set them an example by doing what is good…” Titus 2:7

“Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.”

1 Timothy 4:12

“For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) and find out what pleases the Lord. Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.”

Ephesians 5:8-11

“Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.”

Philippians 4:9

“Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.”

1 John 2:6

Finding Bibles and Hot Fudge

A Shoney’s restaurant in our town closed a few years ago.  (It’s opening back up in the next couple of months…).  When it did, the sale of Hot Fudge Cakes went down drastically.  Like, went down to 0.  Declined pretty steadily overnight.  Basically hit a brick wall.

I used to love Hot Fudge Cakes.  Everyone I know that ever had one loved them.  My friend Carol used to tell me she was going to use her nutrition degree from my favorite university to help the USDA pass a requirement that all Americans should have a Hot Fudge Cake daily.  They were fantastic.  But, you know… it became really hard to get one.  Why?  Because the place that sold them closed.  So you couldn’t just walk in to a Shoney’s in our town and either purposefully or by accident see a Hot Fudge Cake on the menu and go, “I want one of THOSE!”

Could you make one at home?  Probably.  It wouldn’t be the same, but you could try.  Could you order one by phone or internet from a Shoney’s home office or another restaurant location somewhere in the world?  Well, that would be a huge stretch.  I mean, you’d have to go completely out of your way to even see if that were possible.  And if it were, it would just take a lot more effort on your part.  I mean, you’d REALLY have to want one to go to those lengths.

Yesterday, I saw an article that Lifeway Christian Stores has decided to close all their brick and mortar locations all over the United States.  I just sat there for a moment.  After the shock wore off, I thought about my friend Mike, who has been the manager at the Lifeway in our city since our college days I suppose, which stretches into its fourth decade.  What will Mike do?  What will all the other 170 managers, along with hundreds of employees, do?  Then I thought about the company that I used to work for, Family Christian Stores, which closed all its locations a couple of years ago.  A profound sadness hit me.  Because of all the sweat, footsteps, and headaches equity that has gone into keeping those doors open as long as it did.  And of course, for all the good times, the blessings, the ministry, the satisfaction over so many years.  Not just for me, but for Robert, Bonnie, Ame, Peggy, Davey and many, many others.  And then… it hit me…

There is no more.

I pondered the thought for a moment.  Was I overreacting?  Was there information that I was not seeing?  Or… was I spot on?

“No more what?”, you might be asking.  No more stores.  No more ACCESS.  I mean, yeah – you can still buy a Bible, a book, a card, a CD (?), or something that you REALLY want.  But you would have to 1) really want it, and 2) expend a little more effort to get it.  Because that item will not be in your hands any more.  You will not be able to go into a store, and see an item – possibly that you didn’t intend to see – and physically purchase the item.  There are no more Hot Fudge Cakes, and there are no more Bibles available.  Because the store that sells them closed.

I know what you’re thinking.  “Yes, Peyton, you are overreacting because you have a small emotional attachment to this particular line of products.”  Ok – I get that.  But that’s where the pondering came in.  The more I thought about it, the more the emotional attachment faded into a reality that, whether I am attached to it or not – the products are just not going to be in front of you any more.  Period.

And what’s the significance of that?  Well, it’s fairly obvious.  When Shoney’s closed, there weren’t a lot of Hot Fudge Cakes to be had by the people of our fair town, whether they wanted one or not.  (My humble but accurate opinion is that if they had ever tried one, they would want another one!) And when the Christian bookstore closes, there won’t be many purely Christian products to be had, whether they want one or not.  I know they will still be available from 1) Mom and Pop shops all over the nation, which are few and far between (I used to own one, so I know why they are few and far between.), 2) small displays in stores such as Wal-mart, Hobby Lobby and a few other unique locations such as church bookstores, and 3) the almighty Amazon and others who offer products online (including Lifeway).  But the main place that first popped into your mind when you thought about buying Aunt Susie a Bible will now be closed.  The place that you could go browse through if you so chose,  and inadvertently find something you needed (whether you knew it beforehand or not) will now be closed.  The lighthouse, if you will, that represented the place that housed so many items that fed your Spiritual life, will now be closed.

And because you won’t have access to those products, chances are that your Spiritual life might not get fed as often or as thoroughly.

And what about the people who normally don’t make time to feed it?  Reckon they will make the extra effort to 1) seek out a Mom and Pop shop, 2) try to find the small display with 10 or so items on it at Wal-Mart, or 3) go online and search for a product that might help them in ways they don’t even know about?

I know it’s a stretch to say that this occurrence represents a hindrance to the continued Spiritual health of a nation, and therefore the world.  God doesn’t need a bookstore to grow or feed His Church, to spread the Gospel, or minister to the needs of people who desperately need it .  But it absolutely does give this world one thing – ACCESS.  In our convenience-ruled society, access is huge.  The harder it is to access an item, the less it is going to be used, or even sought after.  “Out of sight, out of mind?”  Not totally, but probably more than we know.  This nation as a whole doesn’t show any signs of putting forth great effort into doing what it takes to grow closer to the Lord.  Who knows what a culture that does not have the Word of God accessible to them in a convenient location looks like?  We don’t know.  Maybe people will be forced into disciplining themselves to go the extra mile to get what they need – whether they know they need it or not.  Or maybe they will not.  But we are about to find out…

Can somebody send me the recipe and all the ingredients for a Hot Fudge Cake…?

3 Tests of Authentic Salvation

“The driver on the highway is safe, not when he reads the signs, but when he obeys them.” ~ A.W. Tozer

3 Tests of Authentic Salvation

1. Obedience: The Moral Test (1 John 2:3-6)

2. Love: The Social Test (2:7-11)

3. Belief: The Doctrinal Test (2:18-27)

1. Obedience is the proof of Faith. “We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands.” 1 John 2:3. “In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome” 1 John 5:3. To the true Christian, obeying God is not a burden, it is the joy of your life! Jesus said, “If you love me, keep my commands.” John 14:15. Keep here means to guard the commandments, revere them, they are precious. It doesn’t mean that if we ever sin, we have blown it and indicated that we do not love God – it means don’t look at the Polaroid, the snapshot, of your life – look at the camcorder, the overall view… is the overriding view of your life to “guard, revere, continue in” the commandments of God?

2. Disobedience Reveals the Absence of Faith “Whoever says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person.” 1 John 2:4. Many people have come under conviction, but never come to Christ. Many have walked an aisle, but never walked away from their sin – without repentance, there is no salvation. In authentic salvation, everything becomes new! “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” 2 Corinthians 5:17. My view changed. My love changed. Things that did not bother me now started to bother me.

3. Obedience Produces Love for God, Not Legalism. Legalism means keeping the rules because I’m scared not to, so others will think I’m better than I really am, or maybe so God will not be mad at me. To try to impress God. It stresses us out, robs us of the joy of obedience. In true salvation we are free to obey God! 2 Corinthians 3:17. Let’s all encourage each other to live a life of obedience today and every day!

Cultivating Diligence

In today’s society, we’ve become accustomed to getting what we want fairly quickly. It’s woven into our culture. If our hopes and dreams don’t materialize overnight, we start looking for shortcuts- fleshly attempts at making something happen according to our own impatient timeline. But again, God’s ways are so different from our culture…

“And we desire that each one of you show the same diligence to the full assurance of hope until the end, that you do not become sluggish, but imitate those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.” (Hebrews 6:11-12)

Through faith, patience and diligence, we become the kind of people who can faithfully execute the dream. If some prayers we pray were to be answered overnight, we would forfeit God’s perfect timing for us, and may not be able to properly steward His promises.

“The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.” (II Peter 3:9 )

The word “slack” here is the Greek word “bradunei.” It means, “to tarry, to delay.” Is God merely taking his time for no apparent reason? Not at all – there is purpose in the delays of God’s promises! Here, we know that Peter is talking about salvation. But the principle is still true for all God’s promises. He won’t unnecessarily delay your promise.

God’s perceived delay is just our opportunity to persevere- to press on – to show up one more day, praying and believing in faith. Diligence is about doing our work as best as we can one more day. Pray, believe, and seek His face one more time. Don’t stop. Quitting is for those with no hope. We have hope that demands our diligence in that which God has placed before us today – not next year, but today.

Resist the urge to become sluggish and negative, because the dream of God is still alive!

The Love Deficit

Our lives today are filled with an endless variety of activity and pursuits. There are seemingly unlimited options available for filling up our time, our interests, and our souls.

But we were designed to be filled with the fullness of God and His love for us. No other pursuit will fill the human emptiness – the love deficit.

As Christians, we have the blessing of being rooted in the love that only Jesus can provide. He fills the hungry and thirsty soul with Himself – His love and His presence…

“…that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height— to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.” (Ephesians 3:17-19)

Make it your life pursuit to explore the width, length, depth, and height of this amazing love. To know Him in the power of His resurrection. (Philippians 3:10,11). Only HE can fill the love deficit! Let’s stop expecting anything else to do that for us.

Adoption for Abandonment

“But then the right time came. God sent his Son. A woman gave birth to him. He was born under the authority of the law. He came to set free those who were under the law. He wanted us to be adopted as children with all the rights children have. Because you are his children, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts. He is the Holy Spirit. By his power we call God “[Abba.]” Abba means Father.”

Galatians 4:4-6

This passage explains that we are adopted as sons and daughters of God! He chose to!! How great it is that Jesus was sent by the Father to redeem us, and adopt us. He also has sent the Holy Spirit in our hearts to confirm our new relationship with Him, but also to affirm us as precious and beloved. Our hearts cry out for our Heavenly Father, and the Spirit confirms that we are His very own cherished people.

Jesus was abandoned for our adoption. He was rejected for our acceptance. He took this penalty of sin upon Himself so that we could be delivered from the pain of loneliness, isolation, fear, and sadness of rejection or abandonment. The Father delivered Jesus and will also deliver you. He loves you and cares for your soul. Receive this truth by faith today and allow God to bring healing to your scars of rejection or abandonment.

Your Sin Begins With A Felt Need

Each of us face a continual problem – we sin.  We disobey God.  As an archer misses the bulls-eye, we miss what God intends for us.  There is a real Satan, who tempts, deceives, lies and devours.  He wants you and I to disobey and dishonor our Heavenly Father, and waste our lives.

James 1:14 says, “Each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire.” It is not temptation itself, but our heart’s desire for something that leads us to sin.  (James 4:1-2). You can’t be tempted to do something you don’t desire.  I can’t tempt you to eat a bowl of gravel. Why? Because you have no desire to eat gravel.  We can only be tempted by what we desire.

Temptation, then, is not something that happens TO us, it happens WITHIN us.  As James says, our own desires lure and entice us into sin.  The way to fight sin is not mainly by trying to resist temptation.  The most effective way to fight sin is by changing our desires.

Desire can only exist where something is lacking – a need, either perceived or real, seeking to be met (Genesis 3:6).  We desire food when our stomachs are empty. We desire warmth when our bodies are cold. Sinful desires, then must come from a sense that we lack something.  Temptation is the offer that sin makes to your desires to fill in the places that are empty.

But why do we choose sin? Unbelief is the root of every sin. (Romans 14:23).  We choose sin to fill the places in our lives that lack because we don’t believe God can really fill it himself.  On the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus tells us that since God cares for the sparrows and flowers, he will care for us all the more (Matthew 6:25-34). When we don’t rely on this truth about God’s provision, we sin through anxiety.  Sin says, “Please me, and do it NOW!”  If we want to fight a sin, we have to change a belief. At any moment.  Every moment.

We don’t fight anxiety by trying to stop being anxious. We fight anxiety by “seek[ing] first the kingdom of God and his righteousness,” knowing that everything else we need “will be added” to us (Matthew 6:33).

The more we put our faith in the truth of who God is for us in Christ, the more he fills in the places within us that are lacking. As he does this, the Holy Spirit creates new desires within our hearts. These new desires cut temptation’s legs out from under it and lead us away from sin and toward holiness.
